10 labs
Planet
Rotation, revolution, seasons, and the Moon. The clockwork that makes day, night, and the calendar.

Interior & Plates
Crust to inner core, then the plates that carry continents. Boundaries write mountains, trenches, and faults.
9 labs
Atmosphere
Layers, insolation, wind, cells, fronts, and storms. The film of air that writes weather.
9 labs
Water & Carbon
The water cycle as a closed budget. Reservoirs, transfers, and a basin you can drain.
11 labs
Landforms
Rivers from source to mouth, then coasts, ice, karst, and folds. Landforms you can orbit.
6 labs
Soils & Rocks
Rock cycle, soil profile, texture triangle, weathering, and erosion. The skin of the land, in 3D.
5 labs
Hazards
Quakes, volcanoes, tsunami, tropical cyclones. Sudden Earth, drawn as a process.

Skills
Contours, graticule, projections, and grid references. The classroom skill behind the map paper.

Why seasons happen
In December, London is dark by late afternoon while Sydney is in high summer. The Earth is not closer to the Sun in July.

Earth’s interior
A cut apple is a bad model of Earth: the ‘skin’ would be thinner than the apple’s, and the outer core is liquid metal.

Contours ↔ 3D terrain
A GCSE map question is a hill wearing a disguise. The spur and the valley are the same lines, bending opposite ways.

River long profile
A Lake District beck in spate and the Mississippi in flood are the same machine at different stations: steep and narrow, then lazy and wide.
Case studies
35 places. UK, US, East Asia.

UK · East Yorkshire
Holderness coast
Soft glacial till, a north-to-south longshore system, and villages that have already gone into the North Sea.

US · Lower Mississippi
Mississippi and delta
A continental drain with levées, cut-offs, and a bird-foot delta fighting subsidence and a rising Gulf.

East Asia · Hong Kong Island · New Territories
Hong Kong slopes
Weathered granite, steep catchments, a city on the toe. Holderness is till at the sea; Hong Kong is saprolite on a slope.

East Asia · Huangpu · Yangtze delta
Shanghai, Meiyu and the Huangpu
A drowned river on a delta. Meiyu, tide, and a flood wall. The Mississippi is a continental drain; the Huangpu is a tidal megacity creek.
